girls perched like birds in its branches
nests of paper
lights flicker in the shiny leaves
iron hawks
viral infected driven
flew in a flash of light
brought a season
and i saw
mechanical trees in autumn
but these were two evergreen machines
but now they glow they mark the land
they fall
the earth says
a shake
a wall of water
a whirling dervish of air?
not this time mother
the girls the birds -the fevered hawks
were our species
infected and altered the seasons
without saying
the nests the nests the birds the girls.
now
there is a grove
there is I can see it
two mechanical trees
now no
shake
no wall of water
no dervish can whirl away
iron infections a distant land
no longer two machine evergreens
but an eternal forest above
and girls laughing
along the water
and high in the branches

Thoughts I had on 9/11/07 "I was always astounded when people would write things like why should they care that a bunch of "bankers" died. I worked there, all I ever saw was thousands of secretaries and assistants and people that just wanted to pay a mortgage and take care of families. I wrote this poem back then because I imagined those two mechanical trees falling and how haunted that place will be. When the new buildings go up I guarantee you that there will be days when maybe someone is locked in a stairwell or they are trapped in an office in a blackout and someone will lead them to safety and then that person will not be there when they turn around. Someone will lift a child up that falls in the park and disappear when the parent turns to thank them- there will be many many stories, just wait."
very beautiful... and i totally agree with your thoughts... natalie
